Absolute Freedom from materials,

Image Art of Expressionism.

Written by Kim, Nam Soo / Art Critic

Every great artist has his own drawing style and language. For example, famous artists like Picasso, Chagall, Van Gogh, Cezanne and Dali have their own language and express their creative world which has nothing to do with others¡¯. Their drawings are significantly distinguished, even by a glance. Although there should be more assessment by future historians, but there are Park Su Geun and Lee Jung Seop for   western painting, and Gyumjae Jeong Seon, Owon Jang Seung Up and Sanjeong Seo Se Ok for Korean traditional painting as renowned painters in Korea. Especially, Sangjeong Seo Se Ok who is still alive became famous global artist thanks to FIAC Art Fare in Paris in the middle of 90¡¯s with Ibn Klein Jr.(À̺ì Å©¶óÀÎ ÁִϾî), a master of abstractionism. Seo got space for 20 paintings (162 x 112 cm) in Basel Art Fair in Switzerland and

was invited by the board, which was unprecedented in the history of the Fair. He was also invited by RISD University in America, which is famous for its tradition and authority.

Sanjeong Seo Se Ok is a key person who modernized Korean painting and contributed a lot to Korean abstractionism.

ºÏÇÑ»ê 74 x 71cm

He would be remembered in Korean Art history forever, since he was highly estimated not only in the Korea but in the world as well. He was recognized as an artist of the world in FIAC of Paris. He went into headlines of ¡°Artpress de la Bojar¡±, an art paper of that time which extolled works of Seo, and attracted attentions of painters and critics.

RISD, an American university that has the longest history and most renowned museum, presented an honorary doctor¡¯s degree to Seo and held commemoration exhibition for Seo. Some of his works are now exhibited in the museum with the works of masters, like Picasso, Rouault, Matisse and Chagall.

A prominent French Critic Michel Nurizani(¹Ì¼Ð ´©¸®ÀÚ´Ï) wrote a critic for Seo under the title ¡®Beauty of elegance and flash¡¯ and she described Seo¡¯s works like as follows; ¡®Indian ink disperses like thunderbolt but slowly on the paper. Feather-like hand which flies involuntarily leads the paint and is sometimes led by paint to create a line. Abysmal Black breaks out the line and spreads on the paper smoothly and buoyantly, and resolute ink lines which float mysteriously seem to chase something fleeing. No doubt he is one of the best artists in the world ?omission from here on.¡¯ It is an international assessment of oriental spirit by western people.

Mookdang Kim Sang Soon, an artist who decorated cover of this magazine was taught by SanJeong Seo Se Ok in Seoul University, and was highly influenced by his distinguished teacher. He was an initial member of Mook-Lim-Hoe, and his works were the most influenced by his teacher among his colleagues.

Mookdang Kim takes middle path of expressionism and sublimates permanent law of nature and universe in his own language. Only repeat of language pervades in modern art whose tradition is improvised, just like a flower without root due to unimaginative method without spirit. Hasty attempts never can last long and always come back as disappointment. Thus, methods against modern rules never can get out of mockery or fabrication, therefore are remembered as similar mimicry, mutant or eccentricity and stuck inside the limitation.   Investigation on works of Kim Sang Soon, who becomes 71 in this year, would offer an educational opportunity for juniors to appreciate the essence of art through painter¡¯s works and life and to reflect on their lives. Kim had devoted a lifetime to raise juniors but left campus 6 years ago by reason of his chronic disease. However, his farewell also can be interim closing of old artist, and a restart as full-time artist who aims at real art. From here, it will deeply analyze his history of art, including reflection on his idealism, conception and subjects and appreciation of his works.

There are 3 stages in his art history of learning and creating; abstractionism from 60s to 70s using Indian ink, neo-landscape drawing as a high school teacher, and research stage of expressionism in recent works. He drew through-composed pictures of mountain; he expressed real view of the mountain in early stage, and he alters expression method, techniques and medium afterward. In last stage, he infiltrated colors to drawings and inside of mountain, therefore completed his own style thorough suitable mix of color and Indian ink.

From 1990s until now, image works which realized basic root of Mother Nature have been initiated. He thought that creation, extinction of nature and origin of everything were originated from order of cosmos, which consisted of plus and minus, and the principle of relativity. Then his own aesthetics was born based on oriental cogitation and philosophy. In other words, specific space expression and configuration of Indian ink was integrated, and eventually achieved composition of modeling.

Although rectangular space of canvas was limited, image, shape, subject and thinking of painter expanded to unlimited space and that freedom always has been resided in deep part of his mind as creative will. His images was condensed and reduced, and his minimized language was expressed as concise symbol. His works eventually suggested new concept of Korean beauty, as he achieved new modeling order of re-creation and re-organization.

Grammar and Modeling theory of the Artist

His works are originated from aesthetics of lines and energy modeling of plus and minus, condensed partition of plane, space, configuration and presentation image, reunion and coexistence from the principle of relativity, compilation of space. He displayed creative artistic works with new lines and aesthetic sense. When he drew his ideal, he reached highbrow level that finished each line and dot with a stroke of brush, based on enough practice of technique and spirit. In other words, he lapsed into a new spiritualism which was

substantially different from technique ideology, like drawings of nobility and neo-modeling scenery drawing. He enjoyed absolute freedom and liberation from tradition, and created his own space regardless of objects. Simple copy of nature was worthless, and he tried inside the representative and non-representative world of paintings as he freely used traditional techniques like Gampil, Balmook, Pamook and Seonyum. Now his works are origin of every existing, and he has realized genuine aesthetics through philosophy of moderation. He insists that everything like meeting and farewell, the reason of

coexistence of day and night, sky and earth, nature and human beings can be sublimated by aesthetics. Drawing philosophy of Mookdang Kim Sang soon is condensed into minimum language, and his abstract thinking which omitted tedious description is like a flash created by novel idea of compression and curtailment.

Many great scholars and veterans of oriental drawing chose Taoism or Yook-Jo-Dan-Gyung to express new aesthetics. However, Mookdang chose jh?na and general Taoism to

deepen his another range of creation. He fully understood that drawing could be mastered through inward eyes and never by naked eye, which only can obtain simple features of object. In other word, his objects like Korean mountain, cliff, valley, deer and ten traditional symbols of long life are ways to contemplate and watch nature, but a matter of no great import.

In conclusion, the works of Mookdang Kim Sang Soon are as free as Yoo-Cheon-Hee-Hae thinking of Chusa, and aesthetics of freedom pervades in his works. His works move all over the creation, and offer metaphor of massive order of universe. Aesthetics of image is painter¡¯s concept of universe and real substance of aesthetics. Permanent order of nature is implied in his works, and it was constructed upon diverse attempt, passion for various changes, confliction, life stress, challenge and new attempt to get close to unknown world. All these factors are complicatedly compounded and expanded, and have affected whole artistic world of Mookdang Kim Sang Soon.

Mookdang Kim Sang Soon was born from Kimje, Jeollabuk-do in 1936. He devoted himself as a teacher as soon as he graduated Art department of Seoul Nat¡¯l University, and left the educational world as a principal of Seocho Middle School. Expressionism pervaded in Korea in 1960s, and Mookdang as a member of early stage contributed a lot to establishment Mook-Lim-Hoe, which was initiated around Seo Se Ok. He has worked as a member, and has kept his principle of drawing until now. He opened several exhibitions in Korea and some foreign countries, and worked as a stubborn artist who has kept one¡¯s own way.
