Celebrating the first solo show of artist Chang Jung-il

Artist  Ahn Young-Mok

When Chang Jung-il was a junior high school student, she was one of my disciples. Chang, however, is now one of my colleagues who is active in the same field. Self-taught, I know, she is more competent in doing her work than anyone else. The pieces she has done are surprisingly remarkable. In all aspects of art encompassing composition, color and line, she has demonstrated great capability. It is unbelievable, despite such distinctive ability, Chang has so far held just one individual exhibition. I praise her tenacious efforts in doing her work. As a companion with my former student, I am very pleased to see her creating strikingly beautiful works. "Life is short but art is long." Is a maxim everyone knows. To take nothing but a way is not easy in life and thus I call the artist a chosen people by God. As shown by our predecessors, it is not easy to live a life as an artist.

A myriad of streams and tendencies of contemporary art was already introduced to the nation. We come to realize that what's most Korean could be what's most international. Where and how we can discover such most Korean and best globalized subject matter? Our nature, mountains, rivers and surroundings could be that solution. If we explore our form,

color, line, plane, texture and emotion, we could discover and represent our identity. Art is not the fashion, neither follow the current of the times. It is to seek eternal life and value. Both figurative and abstract paintings have their own features. Even in abstract painting, nature could be the main subject matter. Art is derived from aesthetic inspiration rather than any technique. Thus, I consider that figuration lies in abstraction and vice versa.
Nature is the mother of all kinds of art. Chang Jung-il seems to pursue her art, based on this idea. I wish she could do her best and strive to achieve her own art world.

Artist's Note

When traveling here and there to draw pictures, I come to see many people. In a summer day several years ago, I took a place before the arbor for the aged at a small country village in Gyeonggi province. The sudden emergence of a few painters was perhaps a spectacular scene for the old men who were spending their time tediously. They talked which pictures looked best. An old man asked me what I would do with these drawings. I replied these were to be exhibited. I smile whenever recalling the old man saying "Please, draw it well and then the land price may rise."
