Nature is the mother of all arts

 

   Every act of art and creation by man starts from nature. Our Mother Nature is the source and the fountain of all human arts and She nurtures us all. In the mid 1960s I began to harbor doubts and misgivings regarding my career as an abstract painter. The Special Exhibitions of Modern artists, which was sponsored by Josoen Daily, began to shake from its foundation when the National Art Exhibition began drawing artists to the department of abstract art of its own. After a number of artists participated (in the National Art Exhibition), the rest felt a sense of futility about what they had been doing as professional artists.

   That was when Singihwe, a contemporary Artist group, and its staff members including the president Lee Sang-dong invited me to join them. I remember, after becoming a member, presenting 2 or 3 pieces of my new work. It required some time for me to go back to representational paintings, after having devoted almost a decade in the field of abstract art. In those days when an abstract painter suddenly drew a representational painting he would be banned as a traitor by fellow artists.

   After that I used to draw landscapes in my atelier, without even looking at landscapes. It was a difficult time for me. Drawing Mother Nature solely from my memory was a difficult task and I began to feel uneasy. Then, I decided, let me go back to nature. Let me go out into Mother Nature, into that infinite source of beauty and truth.

  There I shall seek beauty, the true beauty of Mother Nature, I thought. So I literally threw myself into nature and nature became my atelier. The thought that everywhere I went, I would still be inside my 'atelier', the nature itself, gave me a feeling of ecstasy and elevation.

   In those days waves of fashionable trends rushed in, which was so overwhelming that some artists totally forgot his nationality, while some, on the other hand, began asserting nationalism and 'Korean-ness.' I remember the times when the governing theme for prize winning works at the National Art Exhibition was <recollection,> in which a detailed depiction of Korean traditional old furniture was often featured.

   A recent catch phrase goes, "What is most Korean, is most international." However, where can one find that which is Korean and therefore international? How is he to express it in concrete art works? I believe the answer lies in our mountains and rivers, in other words our natural environment, whose forms, lines, colors, texture, and sentiments we must pursue in depth in order to find and express what is 'ours.'This is why I became so engrossed in expressing Korean nature and landscapes.


   In the field of painting today, we have so many varieties of trends and styles that it is no longer meaningful to attach a certain artist to a single type of 'school.' It seems that now every painter is creating his or her own stylistic trend. Moreover, it is impossible for an artist to come in contact with all types of stylistic trends, which include pop-art, postmodernism (which is being so much talked about these days), Installation art, Electronic TV arts etc. However, none of them can stand apart from nature. It is only through nature that

 

a trend can develop and express itself.
   In the root of all artistic expressions lies the Mother Nature. If we compare it to a tree, representational art is the root and the trunk, from which countless branches and leaves grow. However, we can not say one is more important than the other, since we need all parts in order to have a tree. Only when each part exists in harmony with the rest that we shall have a healthy and a strong tree. Therefore every branch should adopt a sense of wisdom to exist in harmony with the rest.

   However, I am afraid to say that the fields of visual arts in Korea, influenced by all sorts of new trends, has been too involved in a competition to produce new works more and more quickly. Every day an upstart artist would appear, producing masses of works based on imported thoughts, in the name of post-modernism, installation art, and video art. It is hardly convincing that an artist could be made in such a short period of time. A work of art should not be mistaken for a slapstick show.

   Therefore we must not be lured by trends or the drift of affairs. Even representational arts can have new styles and so does the abstract (non representational) art. It is wrong to suppose that only abstract art is modern and that representational art is obsolete.

   I strongly hope that the feeling of opposition which exists between the representational and non-representational arts today be resolved into a more healthy and constructive relationship. Representational or non-representational, all of us artists must strive towards the infinite. Post-modernism as a universal cultural trend has been very influential in Korea from the mid 80s.  Its concepts are represented by the terms such

as'absence of modernism,' 'fragmentation,' and 'a mistrust and reinterpretation of establishes values.' These have aroused many heated debates among Korean artists.

   What we aspire today, especially regarding contemporary culture and diversification of value, remains to be an aftermath of the unpopular modernism and poses a challenge for the post-modernists.

   A democratic society must be able to incorporate a variety of cultural values and lead to a harmonious state of co-existence through negotiation and compromises. In closing, I now wish to quote some conclusive remarks made by Oh ji-ho from his <On the arts of painting>.

   The only and the absolute technique used in visual paintings should be "the reconstruction of nature.' If a painting is 'not natural,' it is no longer a painting.

   Thus all trends that are now considered abstract (non-representational) are in a broad sense reconstructions of Mother Nature. A painting should not linger in the domain of a technician or an artisan but strive towards the infinite, inspirational beauty. Even in representational arts we may find what is abstract, and vice versa. The great Mother Nature harbors them all.
